AT&T Treasury’s “Every Kid Needs A New Book”
Members of AT&T Treasury coming together to lending helping hands.
Opportunity: A local elementary school reached out to our Team looking for classroom mentors and readers. Their students came from underserved schools, where literacy and funds were limited. There were approximately 450 students, many who were on the food assistance program.
Solution: after a short time mentoring and working with the students, we realized that literacy wasn’t the only opportunity. These students had never known the excitement of reading their own copy of a book, that no one had read before. Not only that, they would be able to keep these books, as they began to build their own libraries at home. Utilizing the Accelerated Reading List, a book was chosen for each student , which aligned with their grade. A second book was chosen for their classroom.
Add-on: Having grown attached to these young students and realizing just how limited their funds were, we prepared special Thanksgiving gift bags, so they could enjoy a Holiday dinner with all the trimmings.
